Most people arrive at blackjack looking for a trick. A progression, a "hot table", a way to feel the shoe. That is the wrong end of the problem.
Blackjack is the one casino card game where the published rules on the table change your expected cost far more than anything you do with your bets. Two tables in the same live lobby can differ by more than a full percentage point of house edge, purely because one pays 6:5 on a natural and hits soft 17. Blackjack is a comparison card game played against the dealer, not against the other players at the table. Everything else, from strategy charts to side bets and counting systems, sits on top of that single relationship.
Your goal is to finish with a hand total closer to 21 than the dealer's, without exceeding 21. Exceed 21 and you bust, losing immediately, regardless of what the dealer does afterwards. A "blackjack" (also called a natural) is a specific two-card hand: an Ace plus any ten-value card. It is not simply "any 21". A natural pays a premium, normally 3:2, and cannot be beaten, only tied by another natural.

The dealer card is not decoration. Every figure in a strategy chart is a conditional probability computed on the dealer's visible card. That is why "16 versus 10" and "16 versus 6" demand opposite actions.

The dealer has no choices. They must draw to a set total and then stop.
Some live tables use a hybrid, seen at Visionary iGaming: the dealer stands on hard 17 but hits on soft 17. Functionally that is an H17 table, and it must be treated as one when you pick your chart.

Avoid 6:5 tables. A 6:5 natural returns AU$12 on a AU$10 bet instead of AU$15. Independent strategy analysis puts the cost at roughly 1.4% of additional house edge, larger than the combined benefit of every favourable rule you are likely to find at the same table.

Edward O. Thorp's optimised basic strategy in Beat the Dealer has been credited with taking the player to roughly break-even or better under generous rule sets: a 0.12% player edge in his original calculations, rising toward 0.6% under highly favourable rules and as much as about 2% in the theoretical case where naturals pay 2:1. Treat these figures as rule-specific rather than universal. You have five levers. Knowing when each is available is as important as knowing when it is correct.
That distinction drives everything. Soft 16 can be hit or doubled without risk of busting; hard 16 is the single worst hand in blackjack.
Baseline rules for hard totals 12–16: stand against a dealer 2–6, hit against 7 through Ace. For soft totals: hit the weaker soft hands, stand on soft 19 and above, and treat soft 18 as a decision hand (stand versus 2, 7 and 8; double versus 3–6; hit versus 9, 10 and Ace).

Hit draws one more card and can be repeated until you stand or bust. Stand freezes your total and ends your turn on that hand. Neither costs additional money.
Your read of the dealer card decides between them. Against a weak upcard you let the dealer take the risk; against a strong one you have to improve, even when it feels wrong.
Double down doubles your original wager in exchange for exactly one more card, after which you must stand.
The more freedom you have, the lower the house edge, because doubling is the primary way a player converts a favourable situation into extra expected value.
Split separates a starting pair into two hands, each receiving a new second card and each carrying a bet equal to the original.
Two absolutes: always split Aces and 8s (two Aces turn a mediocre 12 into two hands with premium potential; 8-8 breaks up the hopeless hard 16). Never split 5s or 10s. 5-5 is a hard 10 and a prime doubling hand, while 10-10 is a made 20 that wins the large majority of the time. Dealers in live studios will still ask "Split, sir?" when you place a second stack of chips to double on 5-5. That is a prompt, not a recommendation.

Surrender forfeits half your wager and ends the hand.
Correct late-surrender use is narrow: hard 16 versus dealer 9, 10 or Ace, and hard 15 versus dealer 10, plus 15 and 17 versus Ace on H17 tables. If a table offers any form of surrender, prefer it over an otherwise identical table that does not.

Before you memorise a chart, read the table rules. The chart is only correct for the rule set it was built for.

European versus American dealing: in the American game the dealer takes a hole card immediately and checks for blackjack, so your additional double and split wagers are protected. In the European (no-hole-card) game the dealer draws the second card only after all players act, meaning a late dealer natural can take your doubled and split money as well. That is why some European-rules charts advise hitting 11 versus an Ace rather than doubling.
Deck count and shuffling: most online shoes use six decks; a handful of RNG titles use one or two. Fewer decks reduce the house edge, but online they almost always come bundled with 6:5 payouts. Check the payout before celebrating the deck count.

Basic blackjack strategy is not a betting system and it will not make you a winner. It is the mathematically optimal action for every possible combination of your hand and the dealer's upcard, derived by computing expected value across all remaining outcomes. Two practical notes. First, if you cannot memorise the full grid, memorise fragments: hit all hard totals of 8 or less; never split 5s or 10s; always split Aces and 8s; double hard 10 against dealer 2–9; stand on hard 17 and soft 19 or better. A chart is a set of answers to a specific question, and the question includes the rules. Move from S17 to H17 and the soft 18–19 lines shift, along with 11 versus Ace. Remove DAS and your 4s and 6s stop being split hands. Switch to a no-hole-card European table and doubling into an Ace becomes a bad idea, because a late dealer natural takes the extra money too.
That is the whole argument for reading the rules panel before you sit. Playing a six-deck S17 chart at an H17, D10, 6:5 table is not "close enough". It is a different game with the same felt.

These are the situations where players lose the most money to intuition.
1. You hold hard 16 (9+7), dealer shows 10 or King. Action: Hit. The hand loses either way; the question is which loses less. Standing on 16 wins only when the dealer busts, and a dealer with a ten-value card busts far less often than one showing 4–6. Expect neighbours at a crowded live table to tell you to stand. They are, mathematically, wrong. If late surrender is available, surrender is better still.
2. You hold 5-5, dealer shows 9. Action: Double down. Treat it as hard 10, not as a pair. Splitting turns one decent doubling hand into two weak hands starting from 5. Against a dealer 10 or Ace, simply hit.
3. You hold A-4 (soft 15), dealer shows 4. Action: Double down; if doubling is not allowed, hit. The trick is to see the hand as "5 plus a free Ace". If you draw a ten-value card the hand becomes hard 15 and you stand.
4. You hold J-2 (hard 12), dealer shows 5. Action: Stand. Counter-intuitive but correct: the dealer's weak upcard makes busting likely, and drawing to 12 busts you almost a third of the time. Against a dealer 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 10 or Ace you hit.
5. You hold 6-4 (hard 10), dealer shows 10. Action: Hit, do not double. Doubling hard 10 is correct against every upcard except a ten-value card or an Ace, where the dealer is too strong to commit a second bet.
6. You hold 4-4, dealer shows 5. Action: Split, but only where DAS applies. Without double-after-split, treat it as a plain hard 8 and hit.
7. You hold 9-9, dealer shows 7. Action: Stand. A dealer showing 7 most often finishes on 17, which your 18 beats. Splitting here loses money over the long run, one of the clearest illustrations that "more hands" is not the same as "more value".
8. You hold A-A, dealer shows anything. Action: Split, always. Two soft 12s become two hands each one card away from 21. This is the highest-value split in the game.

Basic strategy is not folklore. It is a computational result, and it has been re-derived repeatedly with modern methods.
Simulation studies that let candidate strategies compete and "evolve" converge on essentially the same decision grid published decades ago, and they quantify how quickly bad rules erode it.

In practical terms: perfect play under standard 6-deck, S17, DAS rules costs roughly 5.5 to 6.2 cents per AU$10 wagered over the long run. A careful way to state the finding, and one the published data supports, is this: where a player's utility function penalises volatility, the model selects flatter, lower-variance betting patterns, which reduce the spread of outcomes rather than improve expected return. Demo mode is the correct place to learn. You can keep a strategy chart open, replay the same awkward hands repeatedly, and test how S17 versus H17 changes your decisions without a cent at stake. Playing blackjack for free will not teach you nerve, but it will teach you the grid. That is the harder part.

Read that alongside the 36% figure above. Even though table games contribute a modest share of total harm, a high proportion of the people who play them report negative consequences. Blackjack's low house edge does not make it low-risk; the speed and the ease of raising stakes do the damage.

Limits decide whether a table is playable for you, not the graphics. Check the minimum and maximum bets in the lobby tile before you sit, because live blackjack tables in the same studio can run from AU$1 to AU$20,000 a hand.
